Course Description

This course, and the accompanying CD, are designed to assist in your preparation for the BlackBerry® Certification Program exam, Supporting BlackBerry Smartphones in an Enterprise Environment. For more information about the exam and to view the exam guide, see www.blackberry.com/certification.

This course is designed to be a study guide for the BlackBerry Certification Program exam. It is intended for readers with approximately three to nine months of experience supporting BlackBerry smartphones in a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server environment, who possess a relatively high level of understanding of BlackBerry smartphones, BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, and BlackBerry® Desktop Software.

You will need:

  • It is highly recommended that you have access to a computer and the Internet so you can use additional learning tools as you work through the course. It is also beneficial to have access to a BlackBerry smartphone, BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.5 or later, and BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 5.0. If you do not have access to a BlackBerry smartphone, you may download a BlackBerry smartphone simulator from www.blackberry.com.

Performance-Based Objectives

  • Identify various hardware features of BlackBerry smartphones, and compare BlackBerry smartphone models and BlackBerry Device Software functionality; describe how to customize BlackBerry smartphones, as well as locate and explain various indicators and unique identifiers on BlackBerry smartphones; and explain the purpose and use of major BlackBerry smartphone applications.
  • Recognize and explain how to resolve issues related to the BlackBerry smartphone and data connectivity between the BlackBerry® Infrastructure, applications, service books, Java® errors, and BlackBerry smartphone hardware, including low memory and low battery power levels.
  • Describe the BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution; manage BlackBerry smartphones and BlackBerry smartphone user accounts; manage BlackBerry® Device Software on BlackBerry smartphones; and monitor the performance of BlackBerry smartphones.
  • List the prerequisites for the enterprise activation process; describe the steps involved in the enterprise activation process; and identify common causes and resolutions for issues encountered during the enterprise activation process.
  • Describe common security terminology and how these security concepts are applied in the BlackBerry® Enterprise Solution; describe methods of securing BlackBerry smartphones and securing data stored on BlackBerry smartphones; examine IT policies and application control policies; assign and configure IT policies; explore the S/MIME Support Package and PGP® Support Package; and discuss the BlackBerry® Smart Card Reader and two-factor authentication.
  • Examine an overview of BlackBerry® Desktop Software and what tools are available in a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server environment; explore installation instructions and prerequisites, as well as an overview of the Media, Synchronize, Backup and Restore, Application Loader, and Device Switch Wizard tools; and learn how to perform a clean removal of BlackBerry Desktop Software.
  • Discover the functions of each tool included in BlackBerry® Desktop Manager.
  • Locate important files in the BlackBerry® Desktop Software folder structure; resolve issues and error messages encountered when using the Application Loader, Backup and Restore, Synchronize, and Media Manager tools in BlackBerry Desktop Manager; and list the requirements for the Device Switch Wizard in BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  • Summarize the differences between BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager and BlackBerry Desktop Manager; list the options that BlackBerry smartphone users can set using BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager; and describe the BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager features available to administrators.
  • Explore the main reference and help tools available for BlackBerry® smartphone users and BlackBerry® Enterprise Server administrators; and describe the BlackBerry Technical Solution Center and the types of articles that can be found on this web site, as well as the help features provided on the BlackBerry smartphone, in BlackBerry® Desktop Manager, and in the BlackBerry Administration Service.
